Do SEO Footer Links work? Are SEO-optimized footer links at the bottom of your web pages any good for SEO or are they bad? (does it hurt SEO?). The official answer as of now is No - that SEO footer links don't work.
Matt Cutts today announced at the SMX conference that: “We’ve done a good job of ignoring boilerplate, site wide links. In the last few months, we’ve been trying to make the point that not only is link buying like that not doing any good, we’re turning the dial up to let people know that certain link spam techniques are a waste of money.”
What have your experiences been with SEO Footer Links? Are you finding that they no longer work? Is your SEO footer hurting your traffic? Let me know what you're seeing!

I don't think that footer link can harm your SEO process but it can be useless after the matt cutts latest report.

Actually, after the Penguin update to google's algorithm, there are now hurtful back links. Google has always had a problem with having them in your footer.
I m curious how godaddy is taking this since thier website tonight sites all had footer links for the terms they wanted

In my opinion, site-wide footer links are still effective to some degree. I guess it all depends on how you use those links. These links can be useful to point to a relevant landing page within your site, in other words if I had a website which dealt with information about peanut butter and its benefits, I would definitely use a link on the footer to point to the most relevant page about peanut butter and its benefits.
However, I have noticed many sites which use boilerplate templates and these templates with no fault of the website owner have tons of links on the footer, in my opinion this does not look like a good design and it may be taken by the search engines as if one is spamming their own sites. Again and in my opinion I believe that developers who build boilerplate templates need to go back and make adjustments to their templates so that the footer links appear on the page more appealing to the consumer.
SEO footer links are not phasing out any time soon at least not in my opinion. They serve as an opportunity for on-page optimization.

Hi Larry,
In my opinion, there is one thing that everyone needs to have in mind. If you put footer links that is non-related to the site of course he won’t do you any good. For example, if you are in the flower industry and put a footer link to the technical services sites you will not gain anything.
Let the force be with you

I can see Google limiting footer links as far as SEO goes, but having it hurt you would be absurd! You've got to have some kind of navigation on your site!

Do you really think Matt Cutts would tell you if footer links work???
Google would never release that type of info. I use footer links and I am still rocking it...

I guess there's only one way to know for sure. Test it for yourself.
Just be sure to test it on a site that you can afford to "hurt".

In working for an agency here in Australia, footer links apparently still work for our clients.
I guess we just need to treat footer link content just like most content post panda/penguin. Make sure they are not "spammy" and they bring value to the target audiences.

Your article is helpful but only 50% logical. Footer sidewide links are a good way that acts like a sitemap to let visitors click on your links easier.
I think it does not hurt.
If you look at my site, then you will see more than 50 links on footer. And, I am doing good so far.
Thanks.

As a part-time web designer, I continue to add a link to my website in the footer of all created sites. In addition, I have SEO'd many of the sites that I designed. I have noticed absolutely nno negative effects whatsoever. Of cours, that is with only one link....
