Canonical URL: What Is a Canonical URL?

A canonical URL is the preferred version of a URL, i.e., the URL you want indexed and treated as authoritative by search engines. For example, if you want search engines to treat "www.wordstream.com" as canonical, as opposed to "wordstream.com" or "www.wordstream.com/?trackingcode," you can use consistent linking structures in your site and employ the rel="canonical" attribute as necessary.
