Action tracking refers to the recording of various "actions" (also known as conversions or goals). Actions, as it regards search marketing [1], are actions you the marketer want your site's visitors to perform. Some examples would be:
- Sales
- Leads (filling out a contact form)
- Free trials
- White paper downloads
This lets the software provide you with better keyword grouping [2] suggestions and allows you to customize the prioritization of your workflow [3].
You can get WordStream's action tracking set up quickly and easily. We'll take you through the process step by step in the following tutorial.
NOTE - This tutorial deals with setting up action tracking for your WordStream account, to learn how to view this data in the product, take a look at our workflow priortiziation tutorial [3] or check out our video describing how our keyword grouping tool [5]works.
Installing WordStream's JavaScript Action Tracking
First, you need to install WordStream's JavaScript analytics on all your pages. To learn more about this process, please see our getting started guide [6].
Once you have the code installed on your site, you simply navigate to the "Settings" tab, maximize the "Conversion Goals" section and click "Add Conversion Goal" (the green plus sign):

Next you'll be prompted to define your goal:

Here you'll want to:
- Specific a Goal Match Type - Learn more about the types of goal match types here [7].
- Designate a Goal URL - Learn more about designating a goal URL here [8].
- Goal Description/Value - You can then describe a goal (if you have multiple users this may be helpful) or assign a goal value (you may want to weight free trial sign ups more heavily than white paper downloads, for instance).
Once the JavaScript action tracking is installed, you can then segment keywords [9] and prioritize workflow [3] based on goals you've defined.
