New search engine marketing spending survey suggests that businesses will continue to spend more on search marketing this year despite the economic downturn

February 11, 2010 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of pay-per-click software (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO) tools, has published the latest results from its 2010 Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Spending Trend Survey.

WordStream conducted an extensive, online survey and collected responses from hundreds of business owners, marketing managers and industry professionals. The survey results reveal that, despite the worst economic climate since the Great Depression, demand for SEM and Web marketing services continues to rise, with 68% of respondents saying they plan to spend more on search this year.

“More business owners are realizing they need to focus on search engine marketing,” says Ken Lyons, marketing manager at WordStream. “They may not fully comprehend SEO and PPC management, but they know these are highly effective, measurable and profitable sales channels, which they need to incorporate into their marketing plan. And having endured a brutal economy, they see the need to leverage highly-profitable sales channels like SEM as even more critical.”

The results of the WordStream 2010 SEM Spending Trend Survey also show that many companies appear to be moving their search marketing efforts in-house and will spend less on outside SEM agencies and consultants.

“The trend to a more Do-it-Yourself approach to search marketing is certainly intriguing but not unexpected,” says Lyons. “Given that search marketing software is becoming more pervasive, intuitive and user-friendly, and that business owners have ready access to affordable online SEM educational resources, like Internet Marketing Blogs, I’m not surprised that companies are adopting a more hands-on-approach to search.”

Scott Brown to Win Massachusetts US Senate Race by a Landslide

New social media polling data suggests Republican Scott Brown will defeat Democrat Martha Coakley in the special election to fill US Senate seat formerly held by Senator Ted Kennedy on January 19, 2010.

January 14, 2010 – WordStream, Inc., a keyword research tool and free internet marketing tools provider, has published the latest results of its social media polling data, which indicate State Senator Scott Brown will defeat State Attorney General Martha Coakley in the Massachusetts special election on January 19, 2009, to serve in the 41st Senate seat of the United States.

Most polls for the Massachusetts US Senate show that candidates Brown and Coakley are engaged in a very tight political battle for the seat vacated by the late Senator Edward Kennedy. But the social media polling study conducted by WordStream suggests that it won’t be a tight race at all, and that Scott Brown will beat Martha Coakley handily in a landslide victory.

“Being a search marketer who specializes in researching meta keywords and keyword marketing, I decided to launch my own investigation to see if I could find out more information about the dynamics of this US Senate race based on Internet marketing and social media metrics,” said WordStream Founder and Vice President of Product Development Larry Kim. “The findings were staggering. The data suggests that conventional pollsters and Washington insiders have it completely wrong, and Brown is going to trounce Coakley.”

Kim’s research drew from the three major social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, as well as Alexa Ratings. Kim looked at the sites’ user engagement metrics to compare the Internet presence of the two candidates. Compared to Martha Coakley’s social presence, Brown’s popularity in social media is far more pervasive with:

A 10:1 advantage over Coakley in terms of video content viewership on YouTube

A 4:1 edge in terms of number of fans on Facebook

More followers, more list appearances and far more buzz overall on Twitter

“The social media activity surrounding Brown clearly demonstrates the majority of social networkers favor Scott Brown over Martha Coakley,” Kim explained. “Will this popularity translate into a victory for Brown next Tuesday at the polls? Only time will tell.”

This advanced level of keyword organization is critical for creating effective ad groups for pay-per-click campaign advertising and for informing content creation and site navigation for SEO.

Beta user and independent search marketing consultant Ian Hughes said of the tools, “The great thing is that the two tools really complement each other. The Keyword Niche Finder lets me quickly identify not only single keyword ideas, but the most popular clusters of keyword. And The Keyword Grouper is great for making sense of a lot of data or a long list of keywords you’ve already created.”

With The Keyword Niche Finder, marketers can type in terms related to their business and receive a list of the most relevant and popular keywords for their websites, along with the most interesting keyword niches or clusters. Marketers and website owners can leverage the results from The Keyword Niche Finder to build and structure intelligent website information architectures or create new subsections of their existing sites to drive traffic and collect new business opportunities.

“One of the biggest challenges for business owners is determining where to begin their keyword research and how to continually expand and refine their campaigns to get maximum returns,” says WordStream Founder and Vice President of Product Development Larry Kim. “With our two new free tools, we’ve armed marketers and business owners with the power to instantly receive well-organized, prioritized lists of the most profitable keyword opportunities in their niche.”

WordStream’s subscription-based service also announced a major upgrade recently, including integration with Google Analytics and sophisticated multi-source keyword analytics. It provides users with a tool-set to take those insights to the next level by continually monitoring the performance of their website keywords and offering actionable keyword suggestions that helps them grow their campaigns and revenues, all for a very affordable monthly fee.

Industry-leading Keyword Management Solution Adds Multi-Source Keyword Analytics & Google Analytics API Integration.

November 10, 2009 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) solutions for continuously optimizing and expanding search marketing efforts, today announced the release of two new features in their flagship keyword management solution that represent exciting industry firsts for search marketers.

WordStream is the first keyword tool provider to integrate their software with Google Analytics, layering on tools to help search marketers take action on top of the data provided by the popular analytics service.

The Boston-based, venture backed startup also announced the release of a new tool that allows marketers to analyze keyword data from a variety of different sources within their WordStream accounts. This feature, described as “multi-source keyword analytics,” allows marketers to analyze data from organic search, paid search, and estimated totals from a keyword suggestion tool side-by-side.

WordStream founder and VP of Product Development Larry Kim stated that:

“Our solution is about making sense of keyword data of all sorts, and then turning that information into business-driving activity on your website. By integrating with the most widely adopted Web analytics provider, it’s easier for our customers and prospective customers to take advantage of our Keyword Management solution.”

Kim further explained the value of WordStream’s multi-source keyword analytics capabilities:

“There’s a disconnect in keyword research tools today – on one hand, you have basic keyword tools which offer keyword suggestions and traffic estimates, and on the other hand, your own Web analytics data which reveals how people are actually finding and converting on your site. New features enable our customers to aggregate real, paid and natural search data alongside keyword tool estimates and other brainstormed keyword ideas into one integrated dashboard. This means more efficient and more comprehensive keyword research, which will lead to more effective search marketing efforts .”

The announcement comes on the heels of a recent study commissioned by Google that concluded 53% of enterprises use a free technology solution as their primary Web analytics tool, with 71% leveraging a free solution in some capacity. By integrating with the dominant free analytics solution, and by allowing those engaging in search marketing to do more with their data, WordStream is positioned to better service a wider array of customers.

In addition to Analytics API integration and multi-source keyword analytics, WordStream’s latest product release also boasts a series of other product enhancements. Highlights include:

Improved machine learning and keyword segmentation algorithms

Integration with WordStream’s popular Free Keyword Tool

With this update, WordStream offers a wider pool of search marketers a more powerful solution for aggregating, organizing, and acting on keyword data. WordStream makes their software available for use in a two week free trial, after which users can elect to subscribe to one of several fixed-price monthly service offerings. You can learn more about the product release and watch a video overview of new features by visiting WordStream’s blog.

Keyword Research and Grouping Solutions provider helps 1-800-Mattress increase return on investment ten- fold with paid search PPC software to research and manage search advertising keywords

August 20, 2009 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of keyword research and organization solutions for continuously optimizing and expanding pay-per-click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO) efforts involving large numbers of keywords, announced today that their new search marketing software increased online conversion rates for 1-800-Mattress, resulting in 10X return on investment.

In a recent interview with Econsultancy.com, 1-800-Mattress Director of Advertising Evan Saks talked about how using WordStream to group and organize his search engine keywords helped the national franchise’s online sales rise and costs fall. “We saw dramatic improvement in traffic, dramatic improvement in cost-per-click, and most important, we opened an entirely new sales channel that didn't exist before, with WordStream as the engine that was really powering the traffic.”

By helping search marketers continually discover and organize new, proven keyword opportunities, WordStream's PPC management software not only helps raise the productivity of search marketers, but also makes their marketing efforts more relevant to searchers, resulting in more clicks and lower costs.

"WordStream's suite of keyword research tools were designed to improve the value of search engine marketing,” says Ken Lyons, Marketing Manager at WordStream. “PPC ads and landing pages that are highly-relevant to a user's search query have higher click through rates (CTR). The higher your CTR the lower your cost-per-click and first page bid estimates. Relevant ad text and landing page optimization also improves conversion rates, since customers are more likely to find exactly what they're looking for."

Larry Kim, WordStream Founder and VP of Product Development, said, "The WordStream Free Keyword Tool generates more accurate keyword suggestions than Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery, and other paid keyword tools by weighting and aggregating over one billion unique keywords, representing well over a trillion search queries and hundreds of millions of related terms from diverse keyword sources."

When asked why WordStream was providing this product for free, Kim replied, "We give all this data away because we believe keywords in and of themselves are not very valuable. The true value lies in what you do with those keywords and how you leverage those keywords to drives sales and profits on your site. Since the inception of our company, we've focused on the optimization and organization of keywords with WordStream's subscription-based keyword management solution. It was a natural evolution for us to provide a keyword tool that supplies the raw materials, the keywords, to be organized and optimized."

Search engine analysis of popular higher education search query results reveals the top 15 university websites best optimized for organic search

September 2, 2009 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of keyword research and organization solutions for continuously optimizing and expanding pay-per-click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO) efforts involving large numbers of keywords, has announced the Top SEO College Websites on their Internet marketing blog.

In a recent search query analysis study, WordStream identified 15 university websites that are excelling at SEO and keyword ranking by optimizing their websites organically to rank well in search engine results pages (SERPs). Topping the list of Top SEO College Websites are Drexel University, University of Phoenix and Capella University. Also making the list are Ferris State University, Western Governors University, Pennsylvania State University, Northcentral University, Oregon State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, University of Texas, Canyon College, Gonzaga University, American Sentinel University, University of Illinois and Grand Canyon University.

“As an SEO professional, it’s exciting to see colleges starting to understand the power of SEO and beginning to implement it effectively on their websites, with important elements like the HTML title tag and keyword expansion, ” says Ken Lyons, marketing manager at WordStream. “Even though the vast majority of colleges have yet to embrace SEO, the competition is definitely heating up among “elearning” universities, like the University of Phoenix and Capella University, as well as colleges with online divisions, like Drexel University, because they recognize how crucial search engine visibility is to reaching their target audience.”

The Top SEO College Websites were determined using SERP analysis, by counting how frequently a university’s domain displayed in the top 10, 20 and 100 results for 20 of the most popular higher education and distance learning keyword phrases. Standouts like Drexel University, for example, have a leading SERP frequency rate of 23 in the top 100 results category, followed by the University of Phoenix with a frequency rate of 12, and Capella University with a frequency rate of 10.

Keyword Management Solutions leader WordStream provides search marketers with software that analyzes, organizes and groups huge lists of long tail keywords for improved search productivity, relevancy and value

BOSTON – April 23, 2009 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of keyword management solutions for continuously optimizing and expanding Pay Per Click (PPC) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts involving large numbers of keywords, offers search marketers powerful new keyword analysis tools for simplifying, researching and analyzing keywords.

Keyword analysis is an important yet time-consuming search marketing task. Many search marketers neglect their keyword analysis duties because it’s a labor-intensive and repetitive process. WordStream offers a suite of keyword research tools that eliminate or simplify many of the manual tasks involved with keyword analysis.
September 10, 2009 - WordStream, Inc., a provider of keyword research and organization solutions for continuously optimizing and expanding pay-per-click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO) efforts involving large numbers of keywords, has published the latest results from its 2009 Salary Survey for Social Media Marketing and Search Engine Marketing Professionals.

More than 100 inbound marketing professionals in search engine marketing (SEM) and social media optimization (SMO) participated in the WordStream salary survey, which reveals that the SEM, SMO industry, once thought to be immune from the economic impact of the recession, is experiencing lower salaries. Close to 35% of participants in the salary survey said that currently they earn $25,000 to $50,000, which is down from industry salary surveys in previous years.

“Our survey shows that salaries in SEO, PPC management and social media marketing are lower than we anticipated,” says Ken Lyons, marketing manager at WordStream. “You can certainly draw the conclusion that this is a consequence of the recession, where Web marketing professionals are earning less (forced to take pay cuts) and underemployed (forced to work fewer hours).”

The salary survey results also reveal that the majority of online marketers have three years or less experience in their related fields, and that most Web marketers who participated in the survey live in the Northeast, work for an agency and specialize in SEO.

Introduces Groundbreaking Productivity Solution for Search Marketers

BOSTON – January 28, 2009 – WordStream®, Inc., a provider of productivity tools for paid and natural search engine marketing, has secured a $4 million Series A round of financing from Sigma Partners. WordStream has also appointed Rob Adler as its President and CEO and added Paul Flanagan from Sigma Partners to its Board of Directors.

Adler was previously co-founder and President of CCBN, a pioneer in online financial services that was acquired by Thomson Financial in 2004 for about $160 million. Sigma's Flanagan has a successful track record helping startup companies go public and build market capitalizations over $1 billion.

WordStream was founded in 2008 by Larry Kim, a long-time successful search marketer for major technology companies, now Vice President, Marketing & Products at WordStream. Kim played an instrumental role in the development of the company's groundbreaking solution for optimizing search engine marketing campaigns. An all-new online search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine optimization (SEO) application, WordStream dramatically simplifies the labor-intensive work done by successful search marketers, ultimately allowing for improved productivity, relevance and value from search marketing campaigns.

"The demand for search engine marketing services is continuing to grow at a rapid clip because it works," said Paul Flanagan, managing director at Sigma Partners. "However, many organizations have yet to embrace search, have been frustrated by mixed results, or find managing campaigns labor intensive. WordStream has built software that can effectively serve the ever-growing and solution-hungry search marketing community."

WordStream develops easy-to-use tools that enhance the productivity of individuals and agencies managing labor-intensive search campaigns. The WordStream solution is an affordable software-as-a-service (SaaS) application that enables marketers to quickly and easily reduce cost-per-click, increase Quality Score on Google AdWords, and improve conversion rates.

"Because search can be difficult to do well, there is a perception that it is a 'black art' that requires specialized skills – the reality is that creating and optimizing effective search campaigns is time consuming," said Adler. "WordStream is committed to dramatically improving the efficiency and effectiveness of search marketers and the campaigns they manage."

New guide to search engine marketing for universities shares best practices for higher education websites to achieve top search engine rankings

September 28, 2009 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of keyword research and organization solutions for continuously optimizing and expanding pay-per-click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO) efforts involving large numbers of PPC and SEO keywords, has released its SEO Guide for College Websites.

The SEO Guide for College Websites offers colleges and universities proven strategies on how best to optimize their websites to rank better in higher education search results pages (SERPs) and attract more students though search engine marketing. The SEO Guide for College Websites is a follow-up article to the recent study done by WordStream that named the 15 Top SEO College Websites.

"The vast majority of colleges have yet to embrace SEO as an effective means of inbound marketing," says Ken Lyons, marketing manager at WordStream. "This guide to SEO is our endeavor to help colleges and universities better understand and implement SEO techniques, such as link building, on-page optimization, etc, so they can create a powerful, organic Web presence, rank higher in the SERPs and drive qualified traffic to their websites."

The SEO Guide for College Websites is a two part series, which focuses on optimizing degree program pages primarily by employing established search engine marketing techniques.

"We chose to focus on degree pages because degree and programs of study pages are in essence a university's bread and butter," says Lyons. "Colleges are in the business of selling education, and degrees are their product. So it’s in a school’s best interest to have their degree pages ranking well in higher education-related search queries."

Integrated Keyword Management Solutions Make it Easy for Search Marketers to Continuously Expand, Organize and Act on Keyword Opportunities That Improve Quality Score and Natural Search Results

BOSTON – March 18, 2009 – WordStream, Inc., a provider of keyword management solutions for continuously optimizing & expanding PPC and SEO efforts involving large numbers of keywords, has enhanced its keyword discovery, research, grouping and organization capabilities within its search marketing productivity tools.

While ongoing keyword discovery, keyword research, keyword grouping and keyword organization is a critical part of optimizing search marketing campaigns, many marketers today spend countless hours manually updating spreadsheets to organize keywords and upload them into Google Adwords. WordStream's keyword tools seamlessly provide a continuous stream of highly relevant keywords that can be automatically organized and acted on according to a search marketer’s specific goals, making this important task more intuitive and effective.

"WordStream very efficiently automates key aspects of continuous keyword expansion, grouping and organization - functions we’d previously been handling manually," said Ian Hughes, e-commerce marketing manager for WesternSchools.com. "With WordStream, we can expand upon and manage effective campaigns much more quickly on behalf of our clients."

WordStream is unlike any other keyword tool, Web analytics application or PPC tool on the market today. WordStream enables search marketers to create a private keyword database, aggregated from a variety of sources, such as:

Historical data contained in Web server log files

Analytics Tools Such as Omniture or Google Analytics

Third Party Keyword tools such as the Google Keyword Tool

Dynamically via a JavaScript tracker

WordStream does more than simply create a static list of keywords – it continually tracks and scores keywords according to user-defined conversion goals and other factors to help determine relevance. Relevancy and other keyword statistics can now be leveraged to suggest optimal keyword grouping and organization decisions. The result is that WordStream can enable any search marketer to quickly and easily transform huge lists of potentially millions of keywords into smaller, highly organized, relevant and actionable keyword groupings, in just minutes.

Integration with Google AdWords means that search marketers can instantly transform the most relevant keyword groupings into Quality Score friendly ad campaigns with relevant ad text using integrated text ad authoring tools with just a few clicks. Using WordStream, organizations can leverage their unique and exclusive keyword taxonomy to better optimize and expand PPC marketing and SEO efforts, and ultimately outrank competing companies.

"SEM professionals must manage and interpret volumes of valuable data to build and optimize paid and natural search campaigns," said Larry Kim, WordStream’s founder and VP of Products and Marketing. "It's time-consuming work, and often masks a marketer's true value. WordStream simplifies best practices related to continuous keyword discovery, segmentation and ad campaign creation, freeing marketers to focus on more creative, higher value tasks.
WordStream interviews Professor Jim Jansen of Penn State University about his current Twitter research and the future of search engine marketing

Boston, MA, July 6, 2009 — In a recent interview on the WordStream Blog, Jim Jansen, assistant professor at the College of Information Science and Technology at Penn State University, discusses the current state and future of search marketing, his research on searcher “click behavior,” and the impact that Twitter could have on the search industry.

WordStream, a provider of Keyword Management solutions for pay-per click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO) Web marketing efforts, conducted the interview with Jansen, who is an expert on Web searching, sponsored search and personalization for information searching.

In the interview, Jansen reports that, through his recent Twitter research and analysis of Twitter “Tweets” (140 character messages sent over the Twitter network), he’s discovered that 20% of all “Tweets” are “information-seeking or providing” by nature.

“Twitter may turn out to be a really effective information source, by providing real time answers to questions from trusted sources,” says Jansen.

As an expert in user search behavior, Jansen has done extensive market research on search engines, click through rates and “click behavior” of users, particularly when it comes to PPC advertising vs. natural organic search listings. In the interview with WordStream, Jansen identifies what he sees as fundamental flaws with ad placement in search engines, like Google.

“By separating the sponsored links (paid advertisements, like Google sponsored links) from the organic links (non-advertisements), it calls attention to the sponsored links.” Jansen explains. “Some users respond to this attention in a negative way, e.g. these (sponsored links) must not be good.”

Jansen suggests that merging the organic listings and paid advertisements in a “universal search engine results page” could eliminate user bias against paid search ads.

The full transcript of the interview can be found on the WordStream Blog: http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2009/07/06/jim-jansen-interview
