SMX is a must-attend conference series for any search professional, and a staple of any SMX show is a highly anticipated keynote by a top Googler. Well, Tuesday morning at SMX West in San Jose was no exception. Google’s own Jason Douglas took center stage to kickoff SMX and reveal how the search giant plans to change the search experience – both on and off the SERP – in 2017.

Google announced yesterday that starting on January 19, AdWords will also begin to show local searchers the local phone number of that advertiser’s address as it’s listed in their Google My Business account, regardless of how they’ve set up their call extensions. That means that if you’re using call tracking or another number phone in your call extensions, that call extension number will no longer appear alongside your ads on the local SERP with your location extension.

With so many frequent changes on Google, it’s impossible to notice them all. Most SEMs were quick to notice the removal of the right-side ads back in February but fewer realized another SERP update that has been silently affecting advertisers’ click-through rates (CTRs) for the last few months.

First noticed around April 14, Google has been slowly rolling out a change to the SERP in which the ads were displayed slightly differently. Before April, you may recall that ads were shown with a small yellow “Ad” label beside the display URL.

Now, that yellow ad label is green, and Google has confirmed that change will affect all search ads moving forward

Every spring, the PPC community eagerly awaits the Google Performance Summit, where Google reveals new AdWords technologies that they’ll be releasing in the coming months. Last Tuesday was the big day and it definitely did not disappoint.

As I watched the livestream of the event, I was also tuned into Twitter’s #ppcchat to gauge industry leaders’ reactions to the new Google products. The peanut gallery definitely kept things interesting—they had plenty to say about the extravaganza, from poking fun at the Product Managers’ corny skits to rejoicing over exciting new products to sharing their two cents on early-access beta performance.

The weirdness of the notion of eyeballs as a form of virtual currency aside, it seems that Google could be planning to monetize users’ eyeballs – literally – with its new contact lens technology.

The sun was shining and the hotel pool was glistening, but at the San Jose Convention Center on Tuesday, search marketers at SMX West were not lounging in the 70-degree weather under the clear blue sky; rather they were jam-packed into an over-air-conditioned room to hear Google’s Behshad Behzadi reveal the future of search.

Happy Birthday AdWords! Celebrating 15 Years of PPC Success with Google

On October 28, 2015

Today, Google AdWords turns 15 years old! It’s amazing to me to see how far AdWords has come during the past 15 years.

AdWords 15th Birthday infographic

I was among the first 350 advertisers that started using the AdWords platform back in 2000 (seems so long ago now). One of my personal favorite claims to fame is that I was the very first AdWords advertiser to buy more than $1 million worth of ads!
